Oregon State University head football coach Mike Riley has announced the hiring of John Garrett as the Beavers’ offensive coordinator/quarterbacks/tight ends coach.

“John comes from a great football family and brings with him to Oregon State a wealth of knowledge about the game,” Riley said. “His responsibilities will include being the offensive coordinator as well as the quarterbacks and tight ends coach with assistance from our graduate assistant coaches.  In addition to his NFL experience, he has coached at the college level and knows the recruiting aspects of the game at this level.”

Garrett arrives at OSU after spending the 2013 season as the wide receivers coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He was on the staff of the Dallas Cowboys from 2007-2012, where his brother Jason Garrett is the head coach. While with the Cowboys he was the team’s tight ends coach, adding the responsibility of passing game coordinator in 2011-12.

“I’m excited to be joining the coaching staff at Oregon State University,” Garrett said. “I have tremendous respect for what Coach Riley, his staff and players have accomplished over the years and I look forward to being part of the program’s continued success. I consider it an honor to represent `Beaver Nation’ as a coach for Oregon State.”

Garrett played wide receiver for Riley in 1991 with the San Antonio Riders of the World League, catching 23 passes. He also was on the practice squad and active roster for the Cincinnati Bengals in 1989 and on the practice squad for the Buffalo Bills in 1991. Garrett also went to training camp with the Cowboys in 1988 and with the Bengals in 1990.

“John is about teaching, details and technique,” Riley added. “His broad knowledge of the game will add to what we are doing at Oregon State. We have a senior quarterback (Sean Mannion); we aren’t changing everything out under Sean, but my goal is for our offense to continue to grow and evolve, and John will certainly provide that opportunity to do so.”
