One firefighter was killed Thursday and another injured when they were hit by a falling tree.  They were working near Sisters where crews are battling several new fires that were sparked by lightning.

They were part of a falling crew.  Their job was to bring down snags that might otherwise fall on their own.

The Deschutes National Forest has not said where the firefighters are from.

The accident happened about seven miles west of Sisters.

There were at least 50 new fires started by lightning Wednesday night.  There have been nearly 2,000 lightning strikes in the last 24 hours.
