I was trying to explain to my kids what will happen on August 21st when the moon steps in front of the sun, and why that's a big deal. It's a total solar eclipse for some of the nation, partial for the rest.  I gave them the details, but then I played them this 12 minute TED Talk video of why "you owe it to yourself to experience a total solar eclipse." This guy nails it. He vividly describes what happens during those critical 174 seconds, and why it's so special. If you have time, watch this all the way through.
