In the capsule today…

We find the debut of Sesame Street. The stated goal of the show was to "master the addictive qualities of television, and do something good with them."

We find the artificial sweetener Cyclamate banned by the FDA due to cancer fears. Cyclamate, hugely popular at the time, was typically mixed with Saccharin to mask the off-taste of each sweetener. Most countries now consider Cyclamate safe, though the sweetener remains banned in the United States.

And we find a song on the radio by Creedence Clearwater Revival. Fictional band “Willy and the Poor Boys” is the topic of the tune, and the title of the album. John Fogerty did all the singing for “Down On The Corner,” recording multiple tracks to harmonize with himself.
