In the time capsule today…
We find a noir mystery film in theaters starring Jack Nicholson and Faye Dunaway. “Chinatown” was inspired by the California Water Wars, a series of disputes in which Los Angeles secured water rights from the Owens Valley, located 200 miles away. Once the aqueducts were built, the Owens Valley turned into unproductive desert.
We find the kidnapping of 19-year-old newspaper heiress Patty Hearst from her Berkeley apartment. Violent left-wing anarchist group, the Symbionese Liberation Army, claimed responsibility, and attempted to negotiate the release of their imprisoned members. When that failed, they demanded a free-food distribution program.
And we find a song on the radio by Bachman Turner Overdrive. The song inspiration came one night when Randy Bachman was driving through Vancouver, BC, and he heard local radio DJ “Daryl B” scream his catchphrase: "We're takin' care of business!" Randy jotted some chords down on a pizza box, recorded the song days later in Seattle.
