We find “The Karate Kid” in theaters. The film is based on the life of its screenwriter, Robert Mark Kamen. At age 17, Robert was beaten up by a gang of bullies. He then studied martial arts in order to defend himself.

We find the nation's first seat-belt usage law. Though federal law required cars to be fitted with seat belts, they were not required to be used. New York changes this with a law requiring occupants to strap in.

And we find a come-back song on the radio by Tina Turner. Tina hated the track and almost didn’t record it. However, her manager, Roger Davies, was sure “What's Love Got To Do With It” would be a hit… which it was! The single became Tina’s first and only number one.
