Grandad Pays Grandsons To Pick Up Trash, Then Donate Money.

A Kansas man is teaching his young grandsons the value of pitching in to help the community. Ed Holland has started a project he calls “One Mile at a Time” with his three grandsons. For the last nine weeks, they’ve been heading out on Tuesdays to collect litter and trash along country roads in the Overland Park area.

It’s a way for the kids to lend a hand during the pandemic and practice safe social distancing. It’s hard work - sticky, stinky, and sometimes full of ants - but the boys are up for the challenge. Holland pays them $6 each day, but $3 goes to their savings and the other $3 goes to a charity of their choice. The kids hope to have $100 to donate to their causes by the end of the summer.

“They’re learning to give back and the value of a dollar,” the grandpa explains, “And they’re cleaning up the environment and doing something nice for other people that aren’t advantaged as we are.”
