In the capsule today…

We find the launch of The Drug Abuse Resistance Education program, otherwise known as D.A.R.E.. Studies have repeatedly shown D.A.R.E. to be completely ineffective.

We find “The Outsiders” in theaters. Director Francis Ford Coppola became interested in the project after receiving a letter from a school librarian suggesting a film adaptation of the book.

And we find a song on the radio by Elton John. While the song is often seen as a statement of Elton's resilience, songwriter Bernie Taupin penned the song as a slam on an ex-girlfriend.
