In the capsule today…

We find the launch of the spreadsheet program Lotus 1-2-3. It was the IBM PC's first killer application… and the spreadsheet standard throughout the decade.

We find the introduction of the Swatch Watch. The watch was a response to the “quartz crisis,” withg quartz crystal watches replacing more expensive mechanical watches. The name is a contraction of "second watch," as the watches were intended as casual, disposable accessories.

And we find a song on the radio by Spandau (span-dow) Ballet. The song was inspired by a crush writer Gary Kemp had on Scottish actress Clare Grogan. Clare gave him a copy of Lolita, and many phrases in the song were lifted from the book.
