TELL ME SOMETHING GOOD: “Hero” 70-Year-Old Veteran Saves Neighbors

An Illinois man became a hero by saving his neighbors when their house was on fire.

Marshall Helm was walking his granddaughter to the bus stop in Salem, Illinois, when the bus driver alerted him to a house on fire nearby. It was his neighbors home and as the blaze crept over from the garage to their home, he rushed inside to get them out.

The 70-year-old veteran ran in yelling “fire” and the residents, Gary and Kathy Benjamin were still in bed that early in the morning. They woke up to the shouting and Helm helped lead them out to safety. The door he used to come inside was now engulfed in flames, but the trio made their way out through a back door.

No one was hurt, but the Benjamins lost 40 years worth of possessions, which they say can be replaced. Now they’re calling Helm their hero for saving them. “Lifesaver is all I can say,” Gary says, and Kathy adds, “Hero, he’s our angel.”
