We find Hurricane Hugo lashing the Carolina coast. The storm left 27 dead, 100,000 homeless, and resulted in $9 billion in damage.
We find captain Joseph Hazelwood sleeping off a hangover as his third mate ran the Exxon Valdez into an Alaskan reef in Prince William Sound. The accident was the largest US oil spill until Deepwater Horizon in 2010.
And we find a song on the radio by the Cure. Lead singer Robert Smith wrote the as a wedding present for his fiancée, Mary Poole. They met at school when he was age 14, and they are still married.
