We find a black comedy war film directed by Robert Altman in theaters. M*A*S*H becomes one of the biggest films of the decade, and inspired a television franchise of the same name.

We find the first New York City Marathon. Only 127 runners took part, and the race was confined to the boundaries of Central Park.

And we find a song on the radio by Simon & Garfunkel. The unusual percussion for “Cecilia” was created by the duo slapping their thighs and thumping a piano bench.
