Morning Motivation: Two-Year-Old Saves Entire Family From Fire

A two-year-old Texas toddler wakes his mom when their house is on fire, saving the whole family. At 4:30 am on Saturday, January 15th, Brandon Dahl woke his mom Kayla Dahl up, saying “Momma, hot! Momma, hot!” At first, the Alvord, Texas, mom of five thought the toddler was telling her he was too warm and needed her to remove some layers of clothes, but when she looked toward the bedroom door, she knew that wasn’t what he was saying. "I just saw the flames coming out of the living room and into our bedroom," she says.

Kayla then woke her husband, Nathan Dahl, who’s no stranger to fire, having volunteered for the Alvord Fire Department for more than five years. He had run fire drills with his kids before, but wasn’t entirely prepared for this unique situation. "She's screaming, 'Fire! Fire! Fire!'" Nathan recalls. "My initial thought was, 'Okay, I'm going to get up and I'm going to get to work.'" He quickly realized what was happening and when he saw how big the flames had gotten, he knew they had to get out immediately. "My heart just dropped,” he says.”In my head, I already knew this house was gone. We had to get out." Within a minute, the whole family was outside watching their home become engulfed in flames.

Minutes later, firefighters from multiple area fire departments were on the scene working to put out the flames. They weren’t able to save the Dahl’s home, but they did keep the fire from spreading to the neighbors’ homes. Other than some singed hairs on Brandon’s head, no one suffered any burns, injuries, or smoke inhalation. And although they lost nearly everything that they own in the fire, the Dahl’s know how lucky they are to be alive. "I definitely have a different outlook on life now," Kayla says. "It's made me appreciate and better understand what matters most."

A GoFundMe has been set up to help the Dahls get back on their feet.
