Good News: They Left Their HS Graduation To Fight A Fire

Graduates from a Brookhaven, New York, high school leave their graduation ceremony to go put out a fire. A group of six students from Port Jefferson High School on Long Island went straight from walking across the stage to get their diplomas to, minutes later, heading to put out a fire at one of their classmate’s homes. The 17- and 18-year-old students are all volunteers with the Port Jefferson Fire Department.

Port Jefferson fire chief Christian Neubert says most of the young men were part of the fire department’s junior volunteer program and have been “full-fledged” volunteer firefighters for around a year. They all have been through intense training and Neubert says he’s “incredibly proud of them.”

The graduates had to miss out on some of the evening’s festivities, but they didn’t mind because it certainly made for a memorable graduation. "I got more pictures of me at the fire than I did at graduation,” says one of the firefighting graduates, 18-year-old Ryan Parmegiani. “But overall I definitely remember it [as] a cool memory and a cool story to be able to tell people."
