How to Organize Your Fridge if its Dirty and Messy

If your refrigerator has become a chaotic, jumbled mess during the pandemic, Eater offers these tips for finally getting it organized:

  • Start with a scrub down. Pull out the bins, shake out the drawers, and wash them in the sink if needed. Use an all-purpose cleaning solution, or a diluted combination of (roughly) one part white vinegar to one part water.
  • If it needs to be thrown away... throw it away. That sad, limp broccoli will probably never become the meal you once hoped it would.
  • Designate shelf space by category. Veggies can go in the crispers, leftovers and packaged foods on the top shelf, meat on the bottom, and bottles and condiments can go on the fridge door’s shelves. Don't forget about your freezer either.
  • Use sturdy containers and bags. Place veggies and leafy greens in reusable bags, and cooked foods in glass jars with lids. This will cut down on odors and keep foods fresher.
  • Label as much as you can. If you think it's overkill to label everything, stick to the things you think you might forget about.
  • Make a list. Once the fridge is nice and clean, make a list of what you put back in and where you stored it, and place on the outside door. Cross out as you use.
  • Make a game plan for your food. Think about how you plan to use the items in your fridge. Meal prep will save you time and money and cuts down on waste.
  • Don’t get discouraged. If you forget to do any of the steps above, don't beat yourself up too much. There’s always tomorrow to clean out the fridge, write a new list, and try again.
